Jim Paterson

PATERSON is a rampaging full-back who loves to get forward and provide crosses from the left-wing.

Jim joined the Pilgrims for an undisclosed fee from Motherwell on transfer deadline day in January 2008.

Before playing for Motherwell, he had six years at Dundee United, where he was handed his debut by then Tannadice manager Sturrock at the beginning of the 1998-99 season, two days before his 19th birthday.

However, the former Scottish Under-21 international's early career was hampered when he was unfortunate to break his leg twice in as many years.

Paterson, who can also play on the left side of midfield, recovered to rack up a century of appearances, scoring four goals, before moving to Fir Park

'Stepover' as he was affectionately known as by the 'Well fans, settled quickly into the 'Well side in his first season and contributed to a League Cup run that saw Motherwell reach their first domestic cup final for 13 years.

He made 40 league and cup appearances in his first season at Fir Park but suffered through injury in his second, which was restricted to just 19 appearances.

Despite his injury problems, the club was keen to hold on to him and, after a little negotiation, Paterson put pen to paper, committing himself to the club for another two years.

Paterson proved to be immense for much of last season. Lining up at left-back, he performed to such a level that the departed Scotland internationalist Steven Hammell soon became a distant memory.

It was perhaps fitting, given the fine campaign he enjoyed, that, on the final match of the season at Tannadice, he was given the honour of captaining the 'Well side for the first time in his career.

This season saw Jim become a permanent fixture again in the left-back role and he has enjoyed another impressive campaign.
