ARGYLE Ladies remain unbeaten in the SW Women's Combination League since September, after beating a stubborn Chesham United side 2-0 at Bolitho Park.

Ironically, Chesham were the last side to inflict a defeat on the title-chasing Pilgrims who unbelievably still need to win all of their remaining six league games to gain the only promotion place on offer to the FA Women's Premier League.

Argyle named an unchanged starting line-up for the third week in a row, but welcomed back young Chynna Evans to the squad who ultimately proved to be the match winner. It was an annoying first half for the Greens with the visiting keeper having an inspired afternoon, and league top-scorer Chloe Roberts getting frustrated with a lack of a clear chance.

However, the home side enjoyed the majority of possession and territory, and seemed the more likely to break the deadlock despite the visitors digging their heels in and making life difficult for a desperate Argyle side.

The second half continued with the Pilgrims in the ascendancy, but they failed to turn some better goalscoring opportunities into a priceless advantage. First Roberts was foiled on the hour mark, with the Chesham keeper pulling off a spectacular save from her 20 yard effort.

Captain Katie Middleton then missed a glorious chance in the 71st minute but fired well over the bar when perhaps it was easier to hit the target. However, two moments of brilliance from two of the youngest members of the Pilgrims squad saw the relief pass through everyone at Bolitho Park and give the home side a precious lead.

Tireless midfielder Becky Atkins overlapped and then evaded two challenges before sending over a testing cross which bounced once in the area. Substitute Evans then swivelled and sent a stunning right foot volley from an angle across the keeper for her first senior goal; perhaps she will not score a more important one.

With the tenseness now gone from their play , the shackles came off and instead of preserving their lead, the now rampant Greens went in search for the killer goal, and promptly got it in the 80th minute. Roberts teasing cross was headed against the post by Evans, but Laura Perrett reacted quickest and stabbed the ball home from close range.

Argyle's management duo of Ryan Thomas and Kev Rose spoke at the final whistle. Rose said: "That was another good team performance today, which keeps us right in with a chance of winning this league. We are building up a head of steam now."

Thomas agreed and added: "This is the most exciting part of the season, and while it is sometimes stressful to watch or even play in, the way we celebrated the first goal shows the spirit and togetherness we have, and how a group of people committed to a goal can be a powerful force. We're proud of them all today, and look forward to the run-in."

The whole of the Argyle Ladies set-up have urged any Argyle supporter living in the Devon and Cornwall area to get behind the squad as they look to win the first leg of a historic treble on Thursday night.

The Devon FA HQ in Coach Road, Newton Abbot will be venue as the Pilgrims look to win the Devon County Cup against SW Regional League side Cullompton Rangers (formerly Exeter City). Kick-off at Coach Road is at 7.30pm with entrance £2.
