ARGYLE LADIES REACH ANOTHER FINAL
ARGYLE Ladies reached their second final of the season after demolishing Team Weston 5-1 at Bolitho Park in the semi-final of the SW Combination League Cup.
The win will see the Pilgrims contest the final against Bournemouth after the south-coast side defeated Swindon Town, with the date and venue still to be confirmed. It also keeps up their chances of a historic treble of league, league cup and county cup in a season that is already proving to be one of their best in recent history.
Fresh from their impressive away victory at Bournemouth last week, an unchanged starting line-up was named, but the substitutes bench saw the returning Kay Lewis and Helen Kukor adding some cover for both ends of the pitch.
With confidence high, the young Greens (or Yellows!) started on the front foot, but after a mistake from Jemma Rose, the dangerous Laura Bray, a former transfer target for the Pilgrims, finished well to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.
With the snow falling heavily and the pitch therefore getting stickier, there was a growing feeling that it could end up being one of those frustrating days, but after getting the chance to draw level, the Pilgrims never looked back.
The equaliser came in the 28th minute after a Laura Perrett corner was handled in the box, with Chloe Roberts coolly slotting home the resultant spot-kick. Just five minutes later, Rose atoned for her earlier mistake by firing in her first ever senior goal.
The young player who has just received a full scholarship to the FA's Female Player Development Centre at Loughborough University, blasted a stunning free-kick from fully 40 yards. Only two minutes later, and with the visitors on the ropes, Vicky Barter smashed in a third from just inside the box to give the Greens some breathing space.
The early stages of the second half were rather dour compared to the action at the end of the first, with the visitors Nicola Glanville testing the Argyle rearguard with some dangerous set-pieces, and Roberts looking to add to her impressive tally.
Following changes to personnel, Argyle put some gloss onto the scoreline; starting with Roberts who grabbed her 30th goal of the season from close range after the keeper failed to hold substitute Helen Kukor's effort. The fifth and final goal was added 10 minutes from time through an own goal, and a final place firmly secured.
A happy looking Chloe Roberts spoke to www.palfc.org.uk at the final whistle. She said: "We were a bit nervy for a while early on, but after the goal I thought we settled quite well and began to pass the ball around. We have played better, but in the end it was a good team performance. We are confident and looking ahead to the final and know we can go there and win it."
The Pilgrims are at home again next week, but turn their attention once more to an extremely tight league title race. There will be no margin for error against a Chesham United side that has inflicted on them their only defeat so far this season. Revenge will hopefully be on the cards at Bolitho Park at 2.00pm.
