PILGRIMS EASE INTO SEMI-FINALS
ARGYLE Ladies booked their place in the semi-finals of the SW Combination League Cup courtesy of a more than comfortable 6-1 victory at Frome Town.
Following the decent league display against Forest Green Rovers, the Pilgrims starting line-up remained unchanged, but saw Aimee Barnes added to the bench in place of the injured Leah Brooks, as reward for her impressive recent form in the reserve team.
With places up for grabs for the upcoming crucial league games at Luton, Reading and Yeovil, recently dubbed by Manager Ryan Thomas as 'make or break March', there was everything to play for, despite the competition being lower down in the Greens' list of priorities.
After taking a little bit of time to settle playing up a slope, on a hard pitch and a gusty wind blowing, Argyle began to gain a foothold in the game and started to play some of their best football in recent weeks.
With the ball being stroked around the pitch confidently by many of the young Pilgrims, it wasn't a surprise when Chloe Roberts finished a fine move to open the scoring with her 25th goal of a prolific campaign.
Using the wind to their advantage Frome then rattled Argyle's post from distance, before Laura Perrett came up with a long range effort of her own - the difference being her shot found itself nestling in the net to double the lead.
Frome then reduced the deficit midway through the first half with a stunning long-range free-kick that left keeper Jade Tregale helpless. However, Argyle restored their two-goal advantage just five minutes later, when Roberts grabbed her second goal of the afternoon with an equally impressive finish from just outside the box.
In recent weeks, Argyle's second-half performances have been rather subdued following an explosive first half, but this wasn't the case with this fixture, as in the first five minutes of the second period Perrett got her second and Argyle's fourth after an on-rushing defender helped her shot into the roof of the net.
It was five just before the hour mark when Helen Kukor fired in from close range, and after some easy chances were missed by the energetic Becky Atkins and Roberts, the latter released substitute Vicky Barter who powered her shot past the home keeper to complete the scoring.
Argyle Assistant Manager Kev Rose said that the coaching staff were pleased with the performance as well as the result.
He said: "We passed the ball well today, often changing the point of attack which stretched them (Frome) on numerous occasions.
"Although the league games in the next few weeks are more important than today's fixture, we felt that it was sensible to play a strong side in order to gain some momentum. In that respect, it was a job well done so we'll go into next weeks tough game full of confidence."
The 'make or break March' starts with an away fixture at a Luton side who have already taken points off fellow title rivals Reading and Bournemouth. It will be vital for the Pilgrims to continue their impressive recent form to keep their title charge on track. Kick off in Bedfordshire is at 2.00pm.
