ON THIS DAY
SEPTEMBER 7
1911
Jack Connor, who scored twice for the Pilgrims on his debut against Nottingham Forest in 1936, was born, in Garngad, Glasgow. Connor netted his double less than three weeks after his 25th birthday and went on to finish top scorer that season, with 17 goals. It was his moment in the sun and, the following season, he was transferred to Swansea before the second world war closed his career.
1974
Bill Rafferty notched his only Argyle hat-trick when he scored three-quarters of the goals in the 4-1 beating of Tranmere Rovers during the Dream Season. His partner in goals, Paul Mariner, was also on the scoresheet as the Pilgrims steered a course to promotion from the Third Division.
